Common to uncommon in shallow ponds with muddy bottoms. Often mixes with Short-billed dowitcher, but prefers freshwater. Most common west of the Mississippi. Back feathers dark centered with broad buffy edges, giving a slightly scaly appearanceAlthough both sexes share incubation of the eggs, only the male takes care of the young once they hatch.
