Knobbed Whelk

Knobbed Whelk

Busycon carica

A large, predatory sea snail (univalve). Native to the North Atlantic coast of North America from Cape Cod, MA to northern Florida. The opening can be found on the right side if held with the spiral end up facing the viewer. The whelk is migratory, living between deep and shallow water. On the shallow-water mud flats, whelks prey on oysters, clams, and other marine invertebrates.
