Scotch Bonnet

Scotch Bonnet

Semicassis granulata

Found in tropical and subtropical Western Atlantic Ocean. Scotch Bonnets live in moderately shallow water, and found usually where ocean currents are strong. Prey includes echinoderms (sea urchins, sea biscuits, sand dollars). Univalve. The shell of this species can grow from 2-4’’ in length. The shells of adult females are larger than males.

In 1965, the Scotch Bonnet became the state shell of North Carolina in honor of the Scottish settlers that founded the state.
