Education Letter

Letter to school groups in Environmental Education

Dear Educators,

At The Cape Fear Naturalist, our mission is to foster environmental education and enrichment through outdoor adventure excursions to the beaches, sand dunes, salt marshes and estuarine habitats of Masonboro Island.

Our environmental education program offers a unique opportunity for students of all ages to experience Masonboro’s pristine barrier island ecosystem. Not only will they have the opportunity to cruise the waterways on a catamaran-style marine vessel, but they will also have a hands-on experience observing and interacting with the island’s diverse flora and fauna.

There are few outdoor programs in North Carolina that provide this amazing learning experience while simultaneously nurturing a sense and appreciation of stewardship for nature (in general) and barrier island habitats (in particular). Students will walk away from the experience with a better understanding of not only how the various marine ecosystems work, but with a new knowledge of particular plants and animals and their economic and environmental importance to North Carolina.

The Cape Fear Naturalist environmental education program offers field trips that include inquiry-based learning and lesson plans about key coastal education topics such as salt marsh function, dune plant diversity, and mollusk ecology. Students will be exposed to new ecosystem vocabulary and will also see many amazing shore, marine, and colonial nesting birds on their island adventure. If they are lucky, they may even see some harbor porpoises and dolphins!

I have no doubt that our field trips to Masonboro Island will provide your students with an unparalleled science enrichment experience. Please call 910-200-4002 with any questions or to book your field trip with The Cape Fear Naturalist!

Sincerely,

Captain Joe Abbate
